Underground Transport

Tregarth - Bethesda

Location: The tunnel entrances are on ether side of a small ridge that the village of Tregarth is built on, both are open and accessible and are reached from miner roads near the village.
Nat. Grid Ref: SH60856815 to SH61056790
Date of last visit: 2 January 2002

One entrance can be reached by a path from a small bridge on a miner road leading to Tal-y-cae. This path is about 100 meters long and goes along the old railway line to the tunnel, it gets quite wet under feet so boots are required.

The other entrance can be reached from a miner road that runs along side the Afon Ogwen River on the opposite side to the A5. Once located you can climb over the wall and scramble easily down to the tunnel entrance below.

The tunnel is about 250-300 meters long. It has been dug out of solid rock and then lined with stone and brick. There are small refuges set in the walls all along the tunnel, in these you can see the bare rock surface of the original unlined tunnel.

This railway line was part of the main line between Bangor and Bethesda, part of which is now a cycle track. Also along this line there are also some viaducts, with one small one is immediately next to one tunnel entrance.
