Underground Transport

Park Menai - Bangor

Location: On entering Park Menai Business Parc, you go across the roundabout, and just after a right turn you will see a wooden gate on the left. Alternatively you approach from the Vaynol roundabout (A487 & A4087). About 200 yards along on the left is a steel gate set back from the road, that leads into a cutting in the trees.
Nat. Grid Ref: SH544696 to SH544692
Date of last visit: 9 August 2001

From the small gates in Park Menai, a short walk down the tarmac path brings you to two blocked up railway tunnels with a small metal door on the right hand tunnel. From the Vaynol roundabout side you walk along to the steel gate, on which reads - "Private property no unauthorised access". A concrete lane leads into the railway cutting where a building has been built against the end of the tunnels.

The tunnels were originally part of the Bangor to Caernarfon railway line and there are two tunnels about 600 yards long, with a central ventilation shaft that can still be seen in a field off of the Vaynol estate.

Most of the line was turned into a cycle track and footpath, but the tunnels were converted into a firing range for Bangor gun club in the early 90's.
