The Royal Observer Corps - Clutton Post
Travel from Clutton Hill, up a lane to the north that has a dead end sign. Stop when you reach the footpath that crosses a field to your right. Opposite is a metal gate at the edge of a field. From here you should be able to see the ROC post at the top of the hill. All the surface features are intact, although the green paint is peeling and it is very overgrown with brambles and nettles. There is a mettle dome and aerial mounting on the ventilation shaft, which I have been told indicates that this was a master post. To our surprise the entrance hatch was no longer sealed. There was still a metal bar across it, but you could see where the retaining loop and padlock had been cut away. The inside looked very clean and it still contained a lot of physical items and a lot of the caballing was still emplace. On the left wall was a map that showed the "warning districts affecting 12 groups posts" It was stuck to the wall and any attempt to remove it would have destroyed it. On the end wall was a metal rack which contained box of government issue soap. There was also several items that had been added since the closure of the post, assumably by the new owner. The toilet in particular has had shelves put in and contains lots of different stuff. The farmer who owns the field that the post is in told us that he did not own the land when the post was closed and so was not given the land back by default. Instead he had to bid for it when this post, along with 68 others, when on the market. He told us that ALL 69 went to a single bidder that was looking to put cell phone masts on the land and none when back to the land owners.
