Upper Llanberis Slate Quarry Tunnel

Location: From the Llanrug / Waunfawr road at Groeslon a miner road leads up the mountain in the direction of Llanberis, this turns into a track. At this point there is an area to park, and you find yourself looking into the top of a large quarry.
Nat. Grid Ref: SH553602
Date of last visit: 1998

At the bottom towards the back right you can see an adit. It is an awkward scramble down to the tunnel entrance. The tunnel slopes very gently away from the entrance; on our visit there was about 3 to 6 inches of flowing water on the passageway floor.

The passage is about half a mile long and near to the end of it is a shot passage joining from the left. This leads to the outside at the bottom end of the second quarry pit down. The main passageway continues on past a "Scull an cross Bones" painted on the side of the passage. The water slowly gets deeper until it reaches about 2 ½ feet deep. The passage turns 90 degrees right at this point, and has been blocked by a large slate wall (bricked up). The water still flows through this wall, so there should be a continuing passageway on the other side!

You have two options of retreat. One is to exit out the side entrance and scramble out on to the top and walk back, the other is to reverse and go back the way you came.
