The Royal Observer Corps - Tyn-y-Groes Post
There was very little info to go on with the Tyn-y-Groes site, in fact just a grid reference. We arrive at the location and parked in a lay-by next to a church an the B5106. There was a public foot path next to the field where the bunker should be, so we first took off down there to see if we could find it. The field was full of long dry grass, but we could not see any signs of the bunker, so we made our way back. Due to foot and mouth signs requesting walkers to keep to the path, we did not enter the field itself. On our way back we spoke with a local lady that had lived there for over 30 years and could remember the bunker. She told us that the bunker had been sealed to prevent local children from playing in it about 20 years ago and from what she could remember of the exact location, it was now under a new housing development which went up about a year ago. We drove around to the development, which is on the opposite side of the field to the foot path, to have a look. at the edge there is a wire fence that overlooks the field, which is about where we were told by the lady, that the site was. Again we could see no signs that the ROC had even been here. It certainly looks as though that the remains of the site are in fact under one of the new houses. Once the foot and mouth has finally gone, then we will go back for a good walk around the field, to see if there is in fact anything left. More information of this location can also be found on the ROC Database. Back to Military Main Page |
